| Yeah, I've always said I didn't care for captchas, but the amount of spam |
| that was sieving through lately -- despite all the anti-spam magic that |
| goes on behind the curtains -- was aggravating enough to make me get off |
| of my lazy arse again and write a proper captcha system in all of six and |
| a half minutes. Really. |

| Even though these days itsari.org is somewhat dead (no kidding!), all the |
| comment spam being dumped around here still bothers me, and lately enough |
| so to actually make me get off of my lazy arse and do something about it. |
| Something I should have, admittedly, done years ago. Ah, well, at least I |
| admit to being lazy! |

| Since I am not terribly fond of captchas, I decided to attack the problem |
| from another angle and borrowed ideas from Wordpress, which seems to be |
| remarkably good at fighting comment spam. Digging a little deeper, I |
| quickly discovered someone had already done most of the legwork for me -- |
| 'lo and behold, it's Net::Akismet, in all its Perl and CPAN glory. Ooh, |
| shiny! |

| The rest... Well, the rest took all of 5 minutes to shoehorn into the |
| itsari.org code (really, it was _that_ easy, dunno why I didn't do this |
| sooner), and is now up and running. I feel like patting my own back, I'm |
| now spam resistant too! No longer will I be embarassed among my peers ;-) |

| (One of these days I'll probably discover how easy it is to also implement |
| a captcha, and do it in 5 minutes as well. I wish I was just a little bit |
| less lazy...) |

| Meanwhile, and since I had my hands dirty anyway, I took the oportunity to |
| do a little housekeeping, namely changing a few mysql fields from tinyints |
| (able to hold only 255 unsigned, the guestbook 'id' column was hitting |
| this limit due to the amount of spam) to smallints or mediumints. All in |
| all, a jolly good 15 minutes. |

| Still, I couldn't be bothered to install ImageMagick, so the 'images' |
| section is, alas, still broken. My jaw dropped when yum showed me the list |
| of dependencies it needed to fulfil in order to install ImageMagick, |
| including Xorg, pango, cups-libs, gtk2 other wonderful (albeit in a sick |
| kind of way) stuff. Wtf? I'd laugh if it wasn't so bloody sad. |
